Sometimes life is simply too hard to make difficult decisions. One of the most frequent adulting decisions I have to make, goes something like this: do I feel like red wine or white wine tonight? This may seem like a simple decision (because one could argue it depends on what you’re serving for dinner) but for me it’s quite a tough one which is impacted by mood, emotions and palate. But when I find myself feeling doubtful and indecisive about whether to red or white, I simply pull out my bottle of FAT bastard Pinot Noir Rosé and the world becomes rosy again!
I’ve always been a little obsessed and infatuated with the name, branding and overall ethos of FAT bastard Wines. It’s big and bold, but elegantly understated and simply unashamed of its story. I used to walk down the aisles of the wine shop, actively seeking out the bottles with the chunky golden hippo on. But then again, I might just be a little biased to any wine that has an animal on the label…
For me, FAT bastard Wines speak of celebrations and living large. It reminds us to gulp down this beautiful life and enjoy the little (or not so little!) things in life whilst allowing ourselves to indulge in the bountiful pleasures it holds. When Thierry and Guy first created this range of deliciously indulgent wines, they filled each bottle to the brim with passion and enthusiasm.
So where does the very catchy name come from? It was a great big discovery in the wine world that led to the name ‘FAT bastard.’ It comes from having left the wine on the lees for a lot longer than usual, which allowed it to develop more fully and completely. And when tasted, there was simply no other way to describe it than: “Well, now that’s a FAT bastard!”
The blushing addition
So, FAT bastard Wines finally put a lid on my red-white conundrum by introducing their luscious new Pinot Noir Rosé 2017.
Even though this Pinot Noir Rosé is delicate, playful and floral, don’t underestimate its full-bodied punch of outstanding flavour and its enormously delicious character.
In the vineyard: The Pinot Noir grapes were harvested from the limestone rich soils in the beautiful Robertson valley.
In the cellar: Gently cold-pressed to extract some colour from the skins of the grapes. This ensures the salmon pink tint that makes rosé wines unique.
Tasting notes: Enticing ripe sweet strawberry and watermelon aromas wrapped in floral overtones follow onto a creamy palate filled with fresh summer berries and ending on an energetic note. Best enjoyed well chilled.
Approximate retail price: The FAT bastard Pinot Noir Rosé 2017 is widely available nationally and retails between R75 and R85.
The Little Hedonist’s food pairing suggestion: I would pair this beautifully modern wine with confident contemporary foods, like salmon en papillotte served with flash-fried seasonal greens, or even with a beautifully pink beef carpaccio starter. If you really want to live life to the fullest and be completely daring, serve it with a spicy and creamy curry, or with sweet barbeque ribs.
Rosé is the most seasonal of all wines, and although it’s not ideally suited for the cold weather we’re experiencing at the moment, there’s no reason why you can’t have a glass of beautiful dry Pinot Noir Rosé on a sunny winter afternoon next to the fire. Of course it’s best served chilled and although rosé is made from red grapes, it drinks like a white. FAT bastard’s Pinot Noir Rosé drinks like a dream, in my humble opinion!
Next time you want to impress your friends or family with a beautifully branded bottle of stunning wine, be sure to reach for the hippo. This is more than just a rosé – it’s a lifestyle. It’s a conversation starter and a definite centerpiece for any dinner table. Hippo, hippo hooray!
