Glenelly, the exemplary Stellenbosch wine estate with a French touch, located on the southern slopes of the Simonsberg, is owned by May de Lencquesaing, Bordeaux doyenne and former owner of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. Struck by the tremendous potential of South Africa’s terroir and the beauty of the country, May de Lencquesaing embarked on a French adventure on African soil when she purchased Glenelly in 2003. She replanted the former fruit farm to pristine vineyards, built a state-of-the-art winery and together with winemaker Luke O’Cuinneagain, began producing a highly-acclaimed range of wines.

The winemaking philosophy at Glenelly is one of minimal intervention at every stage, allowing the fruit to express itself and seeking to achieve the perfect balance of French style and South African terroir; producing wines that appeal to lovers of the old and new worlds alike.

The Estate Reserve Chardonnay 2016 is Glenelly’s signature white wine produced from the estate’s finest parcels of Chardonnay vines. It is rich, complex and full-flavoured yet elegant and restrained with great ageing potential like all Glenelly’s French-style wines. The judicious use of oak adds a creamy patina that perfectly complements, rather than overwhelms the gorgeous fruit profile of citrus and lime. It is a wine of substance, with great supporting freshness providing the heartbeat for this award-winning Stellenbosch Chardonnay!

The grapes are carefully sorted and whole-bunch pressed then naturally fermented in new and 2nd-fill 500-litre tonneaux. Extended lees contact for 11 months, without batonnage, enhances complexity, creaminess and texture while maintaining freshness.

The wine has a wonderful bright crisp gold colour and an alluring citrus nose with hints of butterscotch, honey and toasted almond. The palate is lush and creamy, showing poise and balance. Zesty fresh lemon and lime and beautiful mineral notes lead the way to a long round textured finish.

Glenelly wines are exceptionally food friendly. The Estate Reserve Chardonnay is a perfect match for a buttery piece of chicken, roast pork belly, pan-fried fish, salmon and shellfish. See attached a recipe by Christophe Dehosse, Chef at Glenelly’s Vine Bistro, for Salmon Trout to enjoy with the Glenelly Estate Reserve Chardonnay.

Retail price: The Glenelly Estate Reserve Chardonnay retails nationally at approximately R230. Drink now and until 2024.

Today, celebrating its 15th birthday, Glenelly is a world-class winelands destination, including a hospitable bistro headed up by French chef Christophe Dehosse, a tasting room with spectacular views, a stylish museum housing May de Lencquesaing’s extraordinary glass collection, a school for the children on the farm and a refreshed wine brand that better conveys the three key elements that define their award-winning wines: power, elegance and balance.
