{travel} The Langeberg Chronicles: The American Dream Car Tour

As the first day of our #MagicOfWinter media stay in the Langeberg Valley started to draw to a close, we were treated to one more surprise before we settled ourselves down for the night at the Montagu Country Hotel – a quick sunset rendezvous in a couple of sparkling classic American Dream Cars. Hold onto your hats, Montagu – we are ending this day in old American style!

As we drove up the quiet main road of Montague, shortly before the sun started to disappear for the day, we had to blink a few times to take in the shimmering beauty that appeared before us. Parked in front of the Montague Country Hotel were two of the most breathtaking classic cars I’ve ever seen. Polished to a mirror-like state, with glossy leather interiors and sparkly silver trim to match, I couldn’t help but feel incredibly excited about these two stately ladies.

Apparently they were parked there, quietly waiting on our arrival. And we were about to go on a road-trip, on our road-trip, unlike any I’ve experienced before.

At the Montagu Country Hotel, you can make your American movie dreams come true with their classy offering. The American Dream Car Tour offers a truly unique way of exploring and viewing Montagu, Route 62 and the surrounding areas of the valley.

The fleet includes a 1956 Cadillac Sedan De Ville, a 1964 Cadillac Sedan de Ville and a 1956 De Soto Fireflight Sportsman. Tours are chauffeur driven and start at Montagu Country Hotel.

The opening act

We couldn’t offload our sausage-stuffed Avanza fast enough, and after a quick bag drop at the hotel’s entrance, we furiously fumbled our cameras out of their holsters as we hurriedly eyed the setting sun. I mean, these two ladies were posing just for us, in their timeless beauty, and time was of the essence!

As we admired the elegance (and the complete juxtapositioning!) of the two larger-than-life classic cars parked in Montagu’s quiet main road, General Manager of the Montagu Country Hotel, PJ Basson, swept down the stairs to warm the engines. Smartly dressed, complete with a motoring cap and tweed jacket, he extended his hand and a very warm smile to all of us, as he gently eased the cars to life. With the engines purring and most of Montagu’s residents now peeking through their curtains to see what all the commotion is about, all that was left to do, was to jump in. The only decision we had to make, was red or blue.

Driving into the sunset

We ceremoniously wound our way through Montagu’s narrow roads, meandering towards the outskirts of the town. PJ has earmarked a look-out spot for our group where we can enjoy the sunset. I sat on the backseat looking out the window, completely giddy and bouncy, with the biggest grin on  my face. What a luxurious way to make a slow loop through this gorgeous place, with only the friendly hum of the giant engines and soft leather seats for company.

Our timing couldn’t have been more perfect as we crested the hill at the end of Piet-se-Pad. The sun was slowly folding its wings for the night, leaving the sky tinged in pastel pinks and blues as the night’s dramatic drape started to fall on top of the surrounding mountains. Whilst we re-enacted our childhood dreams of driving fancy cars and got a chance to play with the steering wheel, PJ poured tiny glasses of port from a picnic basket in the boot.

The setting was idyllic for some incredible images of not only the cars, but also of our rockstar media team. Jared, with some clever tricks and hacks, managed to capture a few epic group shots, which I’ll always nostalgically look back on. As the sun dropped for the day, ice cold arms enveloped the valley in its embrace, and we huddled back into our dream cars for the descent.

In conclusion

Our little road-trip to the top of Piet-se-Pad was only a small appetiser for what promises to be a completely unique wine experience. The American Dream Car Tour adds a certain element of romance and nostalgia to the valley, which creates a beautiful blend of memories.

To me, life is really all about experiences, and that day, PJ offered me an encounter I never even dared daydream of. I will never forget the feeling of contentment whilst gazing across the lush valley, glass of port in hand, standing side by side with two masterpieces of engineering and artistic expression. Life is just so good.

A massive thank you to PJ and his team for indulging us in this American Dream Car Tour. It’s humbling to observe the amounts of pride and generosity with which you offer these tours to visitors.
