{wine} Feast this summer with Fiver Frizzanté

Summer holidays are supposed to be easy like Sunday morning. With so many social soirees to plan during the festive season, let Fiver Frizzanté take the think-work out of your sips with a six-pack filled with sunshine, strawberries and spritzers!

Introduction

As we lounge outside in the sun during those balmy summer days, the last thing we want to spend brainpower on is what we feel like drinking. Between the myriad of gins, wines, vodkas, beers, ciders and rums available, there’s just too much to choose from. Sometimes, you just want something pretty and ice cold. Something simple that tastes delicious as you await sunset by the pool.

Van Loveren Family Vineyards has once again listened to our pleas for something pretty and mixed up Fiver Frizzanté just in time for the holidays. A six-pack of these little delights crossed my desk the other day, and I’m pretty excited about the way I dressed them up for the feast!

Background

Fiver Frizzanté is a natural sweet rosé crafted from the pick of sun-kissed red muscadel grapes from the home of Four Cousins in the Robertson Valley.

Packaged in 275ml bottles, this hot little number is easy to handle, but just as beautiful to pour. Serve straight up, on the rocks or get funky with your own personal serve by adding some fresh-cut fruit and a side of chocolate. Why not? (press release)

Exclusively available at selected Checkers and Shoprite Liquor stores countrywide at R79.99 for six!

Nice to meet you

I must admit – at first, I was a bit apprehensive as I pulled the bright pink bottles from the box. Anything that falls in the broader category of “wine cooler” reminds me of the overly sweet, artificially flavoured fizzy water I apparently loved so much in my youth. Being the biggest fan of all of Van Loveren‘s wine ranges, though, I found myself mildly intrigued by these gorgeously sexy bottles and what they may contain. What did our favourite wine makers at Van Loveren have up their sleeve with the release of Fiver?

With that, I decided to let my six new BFF’s chill in the fridge whilst I think up a suitable attire for them.

The Feisty Fiver

The following afternoon I sat down on my patio after work with a chilled Fiver. I turned the bottle around, finding the minimalist branding incredibly appealing with touches of blush and silver. Flipping the top, I took a few big gulps (it was a long day of meetings, okay?) and what happened next, was a mind bender.

It wasn’t overly sweet. It didn’t taste artificial. It didn’t even taste like a cooler. It simply tasted like more. If you like sweeter blush wines, or if you are looking for a gentle entrance to the world of wine, Fiver will sweeten the deal for you in all the right ways. It was juicy and lightly floral like ripe litchi’s, but fruity and refreshing like frozen strawberries. With gentle undertones of a sweet rosé, this little number was the absolute embodiment of summer.

I jumped up in glee and pulled The Tall Hedonist into The Little Kitchen to concoct our new summer anthem. I was feeling festive all of a sudden, and couldn’t wait to turn Fiver into a feast. He opened a bottle and did (quite a few!) taste tests, uttering things like “delicious”, “so refreshing” and “cocktails.”

We agreed that strawberries should feature in our pretty drink, but because we also picked up delicate fruity hints of litchi on the nose, we decided to give the Feisty Fiver a deliciously naughty, naughty twist.

Feisty Fiver recipe

  • A handful of chilled (or slightly frozen) strawberries, blended
  • A few dashes of fresh chilled strawberry juice (we used Sir Juice, or you can use the Woolies one)
  • A shot (and a bit) of litchi liqueur (we used Qualito Litchi Vodka Fusion), depending on your mood
  • Rose petals for garnish (or strawberry slices)

Shake up the blended strawberry pulp, strawberry juice, litchi liqueur and ice in a cocktail shaker.

Strain into chilled martini glasses and top up with Fiver Frizzanté.

You can thank me later.

TLH’s food pairing suggestion

As Fiver Frizzanté is quite delicate and light, I’d hate to weigh it down with heavy foods. Think cream cheese based dishes, a sidekick for tapas-style small plate snacks, or a dining companion for summer pasta salads stuffed with baby greens and crumbly feta.

If you’re after something meaty, what about some oven-baked salmon with a twist of lime, or even grilled chicken kebabs or gorgeously spicy wings.

In conclusion

A great drink to keep you company this summer. Pack a Fiver for your sundowner picnic, your poolside celebration, your girl’s spa and lunch date or just to get you into the swing of summer. A quick after-work wind-down, a festive cocktail with friends, or simply a sunset must-have. It’s perfectly light and crisp, offering you the best of Van Loveren’s red muscadel grapes in a sophisticated sipper. They hit the nail right on the head with Fiver Frizzanté.

I can’t wait to kick back with an ice-cold Feisty Fiver cocktail (or five!) this holiday. Whether you muddle it or sip it straight, Fiver is turning up the heat this season and I’m definitely going to the party!

Fiver Frizzanté contains 5% alcohol so, it’s not available to under 18’s. Consume responsibly.
