{wine} An ode to wine: Flagstone Poetry Chenin Blanc and Pinotage 2019

Like great poetry, Flagstone Wines are timeless, honest, romantic and full of passion. It captures the senses and grabs hold of your heartstrings. It’s no wonder that the Flagstone Poetry Pinotage and Chenin Blanc left me without words.

Over the last year or so, I’ve been privileged to experience a range of Flagstone Wines. I must admit, I’ve become incredibly fond of this brand, as I find their wines to be classic, authentic, innovative and a pure pleasure to the eye and palate.

Creating fine wine, much like creating fine literature, is all about capturing fleeting memories of the senses, to be experienced by and shared with others in years to come. Their authors carefully string together sentences and barrels filled with emotion, lyrics, sensory experiences and a tinge of personal interpretation, skillfully woven together with years of practice.

I was recently sent two 2019 vintages of their Poetry range of wines, the Chenin Blanc and the Pinotage. I found myself feeling quite inspired, I must say. I paired this poetic pair with anthologies of my two favourite poets, Tyler Knott Gregson and Rupi Kaur.

Flagstone introduces Pinotage and Chenin Blanc varietals to the 2019 vintage of the Poetry Range.

These two new proudly South African varietals are testament to South Africa’s 350-year-old wine making heritage that have award winning expression in Flagstone’s Icon and Core Ranges.

The Poetry range of wines is about the essence of the grape – openly honest and precise and is meant to convey the pared-down aspect in the same way as short poetic verses capture ideas (press release).

Flagstone Poetry Chenin Blanc 2019

Tasting notes: A romatic bouquet with a combination of ripe melon and stewed pear. The wine offers refreshing green apple acidity combined with a touch of viscosity and explosion of pineapples. Creamy back palate supports the acidity.
In the vineyard: Chenin Blanc [ 100% Chenin Blanc]
Cellar door price: R55

The Little Hedonist’s food pairing suggestion: A fruity, juicy Chenin is my summer staple, especially when paired with another summer staple, the good old South African braai. Yes, but it’s a white wine? Exactly – be creative and write new recipes this summer with Poetry’s Chenin Blanc.

How about those grilled chicken kebabs with a lovely soft-spicy basting that will caramelise into golden deliciousness? Or what about a fillet of fish, steamed to perfection in butter and lemon juice? Pair this poetic Chenin with all the sides – curry pasta salad, crispy goat’s cheese and pancetta salads, creamy cheese platters or even a lazy sushi lunch.

Flagstone Poetry Pinotage 2019

Tasting notes: Mixture of ripe and juicy red fruit supported by subtle spicy notes.
Palate: Upfront red plum and fruitcake flavours. Well integrated subtle oak provides a delicious lingering finish.
In the vineyard: Pinotage [ 100% Pinotage ]
In the cellar: Fermentation: Stainless Steel tank, oak staves 6 – 8 months
Cellar door price: R55

The Little Hedonist’s food pairing suggestion: This one is going on my Christmas lunch table, especially leaning towards desserts. It made me sing odes to the Pinotage grape – by far one of my preferred red varietals. I’m the biggest fan of fruit cake and although it makes no sense to have steaming hot fruit cake on a steaming hot December day, I simply can’t do Christmas holidays without the glacé cherries.

So, if you’re like me, serve this spicy, aromatic red with dessert or if you can’t wait until then, crack it open for lunch with your roast beef fillet, ostrich steaks, lamb chops or meaty griddled tuna steaks. A stunning addition to bobotie or even to a charcuterie and cheese platter, especially if you are adding some bold matured cheeses.

You say summer is too hot for red wine? Think again. Let this Poetry Pinotage inspire you to chill out before you indulge – there’s nothing wrong with chilling your red wine down to about 14 degrees. Pop the bottle in the fridge (not the freezer!) for 30 minutes before serving, which also helps to temper down the alcohol.

For the very daring, write your own wine anthology by mixing a gorgeously refreshing red wine sangria with chunks of juicy fruit and steeped in spices.

In conclusion

A beautiful range of wines, perfect to share those little life moments with you. Whether you are celebrating, unwinding, dining, chilling, entertaining or simply enjoying – make sure to turn the moment into something poetical; something magical, with Flagstone Wines. Create something to remember and recite for years to come.

Thank you Flagstone Wines for inspiring me with this lush range of wines, which will form the foundation of my wine rack this summer!
