Chenin Blanc 2018
Tasting notes: juicy yellow peach and a hint of vanilla dance across the palate and the wine lingers with a tangy note of fresh lime on the finish.
In the vineyard: the fruit was harvested in the early hours and the juice pressed while the grapes were still cool to help retain aroma and flavour.
Cellar door price: approx. between R85 and R95.
The Little Hedonist’s food pairing suggestion: I find a Chenin Blanc to be such a versatile wine, and even more so when it comes to food. I’ve grown particularly fond of Chenin Blanc as I moved away from Sauvignon Blanc, and this particular interpretation by FAT bastard is simply exceptional.
This is a wine to be savoured and sipped, paired with beautiful food and sterling company.
I immediately want to #LiveLarge and jump right in there with a gorgeously crispy and tender pork belly, which will off-set the fruity aromas of this Chenin beautifully. A quick fix would be sweet and sour pork chops or any dish with Asian flavours, like a glossy pork chow mein with its decadent soy sauce dressing, or even sweet and sour pork balls with egg-rice.
If you’re thinking more festive, bring out the Chenin Blanc with your glazed gammon, especially if there are sticky pineapple rounds involved. Also a treat with turkey or roast chicken, fish terrines and patés or a creamy cheese platter.
For the daring among us, pair this juicy Chenin Blanc with a mild curry, like butter chicken or a Cape Malay style vegetable curry.
Living large shouldn’t be reserved for the holidays. I’ve learned over the last few years that one needs to #LiveLarge every day, because today is all you have. As I sit down with family and friends this festive season over a bottle of FAT bastard Chenin Blanc 2018, I’ll remind myself of just this. I’ll remind myself to enjoy every day to its fullest, to embrace whatever it may hold, and always try to find the beauty in every moment.
So go out, #LiveLarge, and when in doubt, the chubby golden hippo always has your back!
Thank you, FAT bastard, for this seasonal reminder to #LiveLarge every day, and to enjoy and savour every sip with gusto!
