{wine} Back to the classics with Roodeberg’s Classic Red 2019

November 23, 2020

When in doubt, always pull the bottle of Roodeberg from your wine rack. Timelessly classic and a sure-fire conversation starter, reserve a seat for Roodeberg at your festive table this summer.

It’s no secret that I always have a handful of Roodeberg wines in my racks. It’s also no secret that I’m a classic kind of girl. Yes, I love trying new things, flavours and tastes, but I’m at my most comfortable when I can indulge in a classic.

I was thrilled when I recently received a bottle of Roodeberg Classic Red 2019 in a limited edition box, telling the story of Roodeberg’s rich history. As I turned the box over and over in my hands, I couldn’t help but smile at how many times Roodeberg has been part of some of my most treasured memories and stories.

Roodeberg’s epic story began in 1949 and evolved over time from the master’s original blend to an accessible contemporary classic in step with changing times yet rooted in tradition.

Its rich heritage is the stuff of legends. Although the wine was produced for export from the onset and only became readily available to locals in 2004, Roodeberg has always enjoyed iconic status in the hearts and minds of South Africans. It is said that bartering sought-after test match tickets, biltong and the like ‘under the table’ in return for a bottle or two was common practice.

Today, Roodeberg continues to bring people together with its outstanding quality and consistent drinking pleasure with the promise of a story in every bottle.

Limited edition gift pack

Roodeberg has been part of the fibre of South African wine culture for over 70 years with a lifetime of stories in every bottle. To celebrate Roodeberg’s legendary standing, the Classic Red 2019 has been released in limited edition gift packs that tell the story of the wine’s remarkable legacy.

Perfect for the festive season, the storytelling gift packs take wine lovers down memory lane tracing milestones spanning seven decades of this proudly South African wine (press release).

Roodeberg Classic Red Blend 2019

A wine you can put forward with confidence. Bold enough for hearty dishes; delicate and balanced enough even for your favourite chicken meal. In fact, superb on its own, and definitely a welcome addition to your chocolate dessert table. Or for those of us who adore fruit cake – break out the Roodeberg Red for a real festive treat!

Tasting notes: aromatic layers of red and dark fruit, cassis and hints of sweet spice and dark chocolate. The palate is elegant and well-rounded with nuances of cedar oak and dark plums, supported by elegant silky tannins that linger long after the last sip.
In the vineyard:  47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Shiraz, 9% Petit Verdot, 9% Tannat, 10% Other
In the cellar:  12 months of oak maturation in mostly French oak. Some American oak was utilized for a small percentage of the Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon components.
Ageing potential: Savour now or cellar it for 3 – 5 years.
Cellar door price: approx. R84 per bottle

Keeping with the classics

In true Roodeberg style, I decided to pair this beloved red blend with a classic beef burger. I baked a batch of hamburger rolls, beautifully dense and fragrant, and topped them with black sesame seeds. Whilst the buns and the wine were resting, I prepared a “build-a-burger” platter with all the classics. Pan-seared 100% beef burgers, crunchy and sweet butter lettuce, juicy tomatoes, tangy pickles and rounds of cucumber. For a little extra splurge, I also added a dollop of homemade parsley pesto – great to break through the richness of the meat.

Such a prime pairing, burgers and red wine. We sat around the table and arranged our burgers just how we liked it best, but always complemented with a glass of Roodeberg Classic Red. Long after the platter emptied and our dinner was over, we sat back and savoured the rest of the bottle, sharing stories of our day.

In conclusion

A beautiful gift this festive season for a wine lover, make sure to get a bottle of Roodeberg Classic Red in the limited gift packaging. The intricate timeline crafted on the box tells a story of treasured Roodeberg moments over the years, and welcomes you to add a few of own, too.

Thank you, Roodeberg, for always bringing us together around one of your bottles of wine.  Thank you for allowing us precious moments to share with loved ones as we cheers to a true South African icon this summer!
