{wine} Make V-Day a ME-day with Leopard’s Leap Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir

With Valentine’s Day approaching fast, I’ll tell you what I’ll be indulging myself with this day of love: Leopard’s Leap Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir. Because love starts from within, and everyone deserves a ME-day on V-day!

Introduction

I’m not a massive fan of the commercialisation of Valentine’s Day, or any other type of celebratory day, to be honest. What I am a fan of, though, is celebrating every day for what is. True to form, I always look to my wine rack for a bottle of bubbles when I’m feeling a little jubilant or victorious.

Lucky for me, our friends at Leopard’s Leap sent me two bottles of their rosy-cheeked Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir towards the end of last year.  So guess what I’m doing this V-day? I’m celebrating a ME-day!

Background

Leopard’s Leap was conceptualised at the turn of the century by winemaker and businessman Hein Koegelenberg.

With an initial international focus, the brand’s exceptional performance in the global market today sees it represented in more than 40 countries with dedicated marketing teams and distribution across Asia, the UK, Europe, North America and Africa.

While consumers worldwide enjoy Leopard’s Leap wines as an outstanding example of South African quality, it is at its Franschhoek home where guests are introduced to the accessible and versatile wine portfolio and the ways in which Leopard’s Leap wines can be enjoyed as part of an everyday quality lifestyle (https://leopardsleap.co.za/pages/about-us).

Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir

Tasting notes: The emphasis is on the mouthfeel. A lively combination of acidity and fruitiness. The palate reveals fresh red-fruit flavours of cranberry, strawberry and pomegranate accompanied by Pink Lady apple.
In the vineyard: 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir
In the cellar: Both varieties were left on the lees for 6 weeks, to ensure flavour intensity and structural elegance. The two varieties were blended, settled and bottled prior to release.
Cellar door price:   approx. R58 per bottle

Because nothing says love like trifle

With a stunning red-fruit aroma and cheeky acidity, I wanted to emphasise the abundant fruitiness of this sparkling wine. I decided to pair it with my tropical mango trifle, which is slightly more delicate than the trifle we all know and love.

Deconstructing this traditional dessert down to a few lovely, fragrant components, it was the most delicious dining partner for the Leopard’s Leap Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir.

Layers of dense madeira cake, enveloped in vanilla bean custard and interspersed with gem-like scoops of berry jelly, it was the addition of sun-ripened mangoes and strawberries that pulled it all together into a gloriously messy indulgence.

Echoing the Chardonnay profile, this trifle harmonised and invigorated at the same time. Berries and yellow fruit has always been a stunning combination for me, and I couldn’t have been happier with the outcome. A show-stopping dessert you can easily make for your loved one, or just for yourself!

And to encourage us to remember our playful side sometimes, Leopard’s Leap threw in a bunch of sparklers. When last did I delight in the simple pleasure of a lit sparkler?! It adds such a whimsical touch of magic to any celebration.

In conclusion

I’m a firm believer in celebrating every moment in life. You do not have to wait for a special day in the year to show your love through small gestures. A meal cooked, a glass of wine shared, a movie watched together or just a chat over a cup of coffee – rejoice in every precious memory. If 2020 has taught me anything, it’s that I should stock up on more sparkling wine, because I’ve come to realise how much I have that is worth celebrating.

Thank you, Leopard’s Leap, for reminding me to just be joyous and grateful for what I have, and to always celebrate every day for the gift that it is!
