{wine} A table for two: Steenberg’s stylish 2020 Sauvignon Blancs

If I could only drink wine from one wine estate for the rest of my life, it would be a difficult decision, but a quick answer: Steenberg Vineyards. Especially now with Cellarmaster Elunda Basson setting her sights on producing award-winning top-tier Sauvignon Blancs, and unveiling her 2020 masterpieces in stylish new outfits.

Introduction

I’m completely transparent about my love for Steenberg. I was enchanted by its heart and people since the first time I set foot in their tasting room a few year ago. Since then, every visit to Steenberg has been nothing short of spectacular; whether it was for a wine tasting, a meal, to buy a bottle of wine or to simply meander through the fynbos gardens.

I was so grateful to receive two bottles of wine from Steenberg recently, and not just any wine. The first Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc crafted by Cellarmaster Elunda Basson has stepped out in style expressing its timeless elegance with a refined new look.

Background

Since joining Steenberg Vineyards in June 2019 as Cellarmaster and General Manager at the pinnacle of her career, Elunda has set her sights on securing Steenberg’s rightful place as a producer of top tier Sauvignon Blanc.

The vibrant Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2020 and the more nuanced Steenberg Rattlesnake Sauvignon Blanc 2019 are the first Steenberg wines to make their debut with new sophisticated labels that give prominence to Steenberg’s iconic swan and reflect the quality, elegance and esteem upheld by Steenberg Vineyards since 1682. The contemporary and timeless aesthetic of the new packaging will be extended to Steenberg Merlot and Syrah later this year (press release).

Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc 2020

Tasting notes:  A seductive bouquet of fresh Cape gooseberries, nettles, capsicum and white blossom. This cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc has a sumptuous entry tied to an enduring length. The lifting acidity maintains a lively flavour on the palate with grapefruit zest and elderflower while maintaining a distinctive mineral core derived from the Steenberg terroir.
Cellaring potential:  All the elements of this wine will enable it to bottle age well over the next 2-5 years.
Cellar door price:  approx. R145 per bottle

Steenberg Rattlesnake Sauvignon Blanc 2020

Tasting notes:  White blossom, elderflower, fresh asparagus and cape gooseberry marry on both the nose and palate. Acidity and spice form the backbone, dominating on the palate, while a creamy texture rounds out the overall mouthfeel. The palate shows capsicum, nasturtium and lime. A lingering mineral finish completes the experience.
Cellaring potential:  Although beautifully balanced from date of release, this wine is still developing. Drink now, but wait five to seven years for a truly evolved experience.
Cellar door price:  approx. R170 per bottle

A stylish burger

Hear me out:  I love an aromatic Sauvignon Blanc with a burger, and I’ll tell you why. For me, the meat part of the burger is not the main focus. Yes, I did use wagyu beef patties for these burgers, but my joy stems from the toppings, which begs for a Sauvignon Blanc.

On this particular evening, I made my own burger rolls from scratch. I layered peppery rocket, juicy tomato and red onion on the top of the bun, and saved the good stuff for the bottom.

Squished between generous dollops of smashed avo and a spicy aubergine relish – a gorgeously grilled wagyu beef patty. I fried up a batch of salty sweet potato chips whilst my Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc chilled down to about 12 degrees.

Now tell me this is not a stylish plate to accompany a seductive Sauvignon Blanc. An absolute feast of taste and texture, it’s a boldly exquisite pairing that only accentuates and spotlights the complex passion of Elunda’s wine-making.

In conclusion

Long after we cleared our plates, The Tall Hedonist and I sat quietly over the remainder of the bottle of Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc, swirling last sips against candle light. Yes, these are two wines I could drink for the rest of my life, with memories of Steenberg’s sunshine and mountain views at the back of my mind.

Congratulations, Elunda, on two superb wines, and thank you for gifting us with an evening of sterling Sauvignon Blancs.
