{connect} Keeping it cool: how to pack, stack and store your snacks for summer

November 22, 2021

My absolute favourite thing about summer is the bountiful opportunities to enjoy your meals outside – whether that is around the braai, on the patio, next to the beach or at a picnic or hike.

Keeping it cool

Somehow, your food always tastes better when paired with a generous serving of fresh air. The issue though, is how to transport, pack, stack and store your meals conveniently when you are going out for the day.

Luckily, there are some incredible eco-friendly products available to help you keep your food cool during those hot summer’s days.

I’ll also share my favourite travel salad recipe and some clever avs packing tips, seeing as they make the most perfect day trip snack!

Salad jar

The good old glass jar. A great way to prevent leaks and spills, the salad jar is a staple in our house. Reusable, easy to travel with, and a no-mess, no-fuss way of enjoying your favourite salad, the glass also keeps your food cooler for longer.

You can prep your salad jars the night before, close them tightly and store them in the fridge, so that they’re nice and chilly the next morning, ready to pack!

Remember to always put your ZZ2 Afrikado Harmony Avs at the top of the jar, and give it a good squeeze of lemon before closing – not only great for taste, but also keeps the avs from turning brown.

Beeswax wraps

Perfect for sandwiches, wraps and breads, beeswax wraps are a sustainable, eco-friendly approach to cling wrap. Reusable, inexpensive and really cute, these are great for wrapping sandwiches with some stability and structure.

Beeswax wraps are also breathable, meaning they keep your food fresher for longer, without going soggy or mouldy.

Cooler bag

We all grew up with an array of cooler bags. They come in all shapes and sizes, from sturdy, insulated boxes to foldable shoppers with an insulated lining. This carry-all is still a great idea for transporting food during summer, as they are made to balance the temperature inside and out, keeping your food at nearly the same temperature as what they were stored at before.

It protects your food items and keeps it out of the direct sun, and also is a much better alternative than plastic. You have the versatility of size, meaning that one cooler bag is suited to many occasions!

Ice bricks

Another classic picnic accessory is the blue reusable ice bricks. Simply pop them in the freezer overnight and slip them into the bottom of your cooler bag for a more regulated temperature in the cooler. And when you’re done, put them back in the freezer for next time. So simple to use and offers you icy beverages all day long!

If you don’t have any reusable ice bricks, you can also fill empty 500ml water bottles with drinking water or your favourite cooldrink, freeze them overnight, and double them up as icy beverages and as ice bricks!

How to keep your avs fresh al-fresco

Slice or dice your avs into blocks, but don’t add it to your salad before you leave the house. Store your avs in a Tupperware or glass jar and add that generous squeeze of fresh lemon juice before making sure it’s airtight. The lemon will slow the browning process, and add some freshness to your salad!

You can also spritz your avs with olive oil – again, great for a salad dressing, but also great for keeping your avs fresh.

If you want to store half an avo, make sure to remove the pip and cover it tightly with cling wrap or a beeswax wrap, making sure there are no air between the flesh and the cover. You also get really cool reusable silicone food savers that work a charm for cut fruit and veg.

The ultimate salad jar recipe

I have bookmarked this recipe years ago, and always use it (with a few variations, of course) every time without fail to fill my salad jars. Read more here:
