{wine} With love from Rascallion Wines – bottles with a cause

September 28, 2020

No jargon, no expansive tasting notes. Rascallion Wines is rather boldly redirecting the wine conversation to a much more important cause than terroir or temperature.

Introduction

Everyone that knows me, knows that I like to play with my food and wine. Yes, I try in earnest to learn how to swirl and sip and taste properly, but sometimes I just want to kick back with a great wine without trying so hard to compartmentalise, analyse and interpret the notes and undertones.

I was incredibly excited and curious when the Rascalette of Rascallion Wines asked me, quite frankly,  if I was thirsty. Well, yes! Always! A few weeks later, a box of Rascallion Wines arrived at my door, and the bottles were bursting to be unboxed.

I unpacked five bold, bright and beautiful bottles from their With Love from the Cape Collection. I immediately knew what I wanted to do for a food pairing. But first, I needed to take my five new friends on a road trip to an iconic location for a little photo shoot…because what says Cape Town more than our beautiful mountain and oceans?

Background

Launched in 2018, Rascallion Wines is a négociant based in Stellenbosch. They source finished wine from their partner wine cellars in Stellenbosch, the Swartland, Darling, Roberston and Piekenierskloof.

Rascallion Wines want to change the conversation so they won’t bombard you with history, terroir or complicated jargon – they’re here to provide interesting, easy-drinking wines for us to enjoy (https://rascallionwines.co.za/).

My first impressions

Rascallion WinesWith Love from the Cape Collection gives consumers permission to strip away their wine connoisseur jackets and starched collars and to chuck the wine dictionary out the window. It gives you permission to be unapologetically you and to enjoy this range of wines for exactly what it is; utterly fantastic wine.

Visually striking, these bottles break through all that’s a wine labeling convention and expectation. You can open a bottle without worrying about cellaring potential, or about lusting after a wine you’re saving for a “special occasion.” You can drink it when you want to, because you want to and simply because you can. No explanation needed for your choice, other than that it’s what you enjoy.

With Love from the Cape Collection

Rascallion Wines has launched the newest collection, the With Love from the Cape Collection – this collection is all about celebrating the beautiful Mother City anywhere in the world.

The collection includes the following five wines, and retails at about R70 – R80 a bottle:

SAUVIGNON BLANC 2019

Vibrant green grass and gooseberry aromas, broad palate with lively mineral finish.

CHENIN BLANC 2019

Bright fruit flavours of pear, white peaches are the primary flavors on the palate, with hints of oatmeal and brioche on the finish which add intensity and mouthfeel.

PINOTAGE 2019

Bright red berry, plum and mulberry notes with savoury undertones and a sweet finish.

PINOTAGE ROSÉ 2019

Elegant floral notes on the nose with a soft entry to the mid-palate. The palate broadens out to the end and shows a savouriness towards the end.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2019

Juicy dark plum and fruit, chocolate richness and soft tannins on the exit. The Cabernet Sauvignon recently received 90 points in the Tim Atkin South Africa Report 2020.

Cheese and wine

Our Cape Townians really love our cheese and charcuterie platters. Even more so if we can pair a platter with a large glass or two of wine. To express my utter love for Cape Town, I paired the full range of Rascallion Wines with a 100% local selection of cheeses, meats and preserves.  A very important side note – I absolutely adore the Rosé with its gorgeously floral notes which tapers down to a delicious minerality on the finish.

The two reds are perfect for rich, fatty slivers of salami or cured coppa ham, proscuitto or even the more mature hard cheeses. The Chenin Blanc laps up anything creamy, and paired a real treat with the gooey brie and cream cheese, especially when served with a syrupy side of preserved clementine halves. The crisp, clean Sauvignon Blanc loved the pepper cheddar, surprisingly! But it also loves to have the spotlight all to itself.

In conclusion

Not only does the Rascallion Wines With Love from the Cape Collection give everyone across the globe a taste of our beautiful Mother City, but it also gives back to a very important cause through their collaboration with Dignity Dreams.

Keeping girls and women in education is a vital part of maintaining the drive towards economic and social empowerment for women in South Africa and Africa. This is a cause I can raise a glass to!

Thank you so much, Rascallion Wines, for putting the fun back into wining. And thank you for using your bright and bold space in our country to uplift and centralise such an important cause, in partnership with Dignity Dreams.
