Lock-down has reminded me of the enjoyment found in the simplest of things. An icy bottle of La Motte Sauvignon Blanc and quesadillas, for example. No frills, no fuss; just pure enjoyment.
Introduction
We tend to think that food and wine pairings have to be extravagant, over the top or even surprising. For me, the best kind of pairings are those you put together in your kitchen when you have a quiet moment to enjoy a simple meal.
I was grateful to receive a few bottles of La Motte‘s 2019 Sauvignon Blanc a few weeks back. A delightfully fresh and zesty white, I wanted to pair it with something that will enhance its tropical notes, without overpowering the delicately silky and citrussy undertones.

La Motte Sauvignon Blanc 2019
I love pairing woody, earthy herbs and vegetables with a bold Sauvignon Blanc like La Motte‘s. Nothing too complicated, as the wine itself is deliciously complex and nuanced without being outshone by a food pairing.
Tasting notes: Lots of gooseberry on the nose, together with lemon and tropical
notes. Very polished and silky on the palate.
In the vineyard: This wine was made from grapes originating from vineyards in several areas of the Cape Winelands — Franschhoek (25%), Stellenbosch (50%) and the Cape
South Coast (25%).
In the cellar: After fermentation, the wine was left on the lees for three months to enhance complexity. For further complexity, the wine was blended with 8% Semillon.
Cellar door price: approx. R80 a bottle.
The Little Hedonist‘s food pairing suggestion: Wanting to highlight the La Motte Sauvignon Blanc’s gorgeous natural acidity, I revolved my meal around something rich and indulgent, perfect for a weekend brunch or an easy week-day dinner. I decided to make some mature gouda and mushroom quesadillas. Loaded with gooey, stringy cheese and soft, buttery, herby mushrooms, these seem the perfect companion to this lively white. Served warm with lemon wedges, chunks of creamy avocado and dollops of sour cream, this was a beautifully simple meal.
La Motte‘s Sauvignon Blanc also pairs with seafood and spicier cuisines, as well as earthy goat’s cheese and savoury snacks.
In conclusion
As we clinked our glasses, I felt grateful for the simple things in life. The small indulgences; the uncomplicated things that bring us joy in a time when there is so much uncertainty. For me, in this moment, life was simply good.
Thank you, La Motte, for allowing us to indulge in small pleasures with your Sauvignon Blanc!
