{spirits} Sugarbird Honey & Moringa gin – let the festive feels flow!

October 24, 2023

Can you believe we are almost at the end of October!? In a few short weeks, we’ll hopefully all be on summer holidays, enjoying the longer days and carefree feasting! As I’m slowly starting to stock my gin cupboard for the festive season, I quickly wanted to tell you about the Sugarbird Honey & Moringa Gin, and why this should be at the top of your “Dear Father Christmas” list this year…

Multi award-winning craft spirits producer, Sugarbird Distillery,  which embodies flavours from the Cape Floral Kingdom, continues to grow internationally, as it collects accolades and launches exciting new products.

Initially released as a limited edition gin “mini”, I was super stoked to receive a full size bottle of Sugarbird’s new Honeybush & Moringa gin recently. Filled with earthy fynbos aromas, there’s a touch of sweet that lingers beautifully like a summer sunset long after the last sip. Amber in colour, this gin is warming, woody and herbaceous – a gorgeous addition to the Sugarbird stable. 🥰 I couldn’t think of any better drink to enjoy at sunset, as it captures the essence of Africa in a glass.

We all know what honey tastes like, but you may ask yourself, what is moringa and what does it taste like? Moringa oleifera, also known as horseradish tree, is a tree native to India, Pakistan, and Nepal, and has been enjoying some attention over the last few years due to its superfood qualities. Although relatively new to the western world, this nutrient-packed plant has been used in ancient Indian medicine for thousands of years. Moringa is the perfect yin to the honey yan in this latest addition to the Sugarbird gin collective, as it adds a gorgeously semi-sweet, earthy and slightly green note to ease the silkiness of the honey. Absolutely amazing!

And yes, I’m 100%  team fruitcake! Way too excited to wait for Christmas, I made these gorgeous dark chocolate enrobed fruitcake & speculaas truffles to pair with our Sugarbird cocktails, echoing the embracing spices and rich, toffee flavours of the gin.

As for the cocktail – The Tall Hedonist shook up a strong honeybush tea infusion with the Honeybush & Moringa gin, lime juice, simple syrup and fresh thyme sprigs from the garden, topping it up with club soda to elevate our usual G&T’s to a fancy G&TEA party!
